Occasionally I am able to jump out of the time frame I am writing in and write something in the future of the story. Sometimes I write in book 2: for example, I've written chapter one of book two. This is not something that surprises me, because I know in almost all certainty and entirety what happens in book 1, so naturally the first of book two isn't a stretch.
However, sometimes I write late, late into book three. This happens on a whim, and I just write, without having things really planning. Sometimes it's startling to see what's there: I learn unexpected dynamics between people, learn new events that happen, and even wonder where characters are until I found out they are dead.
Sometimes this is unnerving and sad. It makes me appreciate some of the moments in book one more, not only for their usual innocence but also able to cherish things before they get complicated and the people that get to be around then.
